SEB MUN 2024 – en
On November 22, 2024, the Opening Ceremony of SEBMUN took place. United Nations conference models, such as SEBMUN, are not just academic exercises; they are unique opportunities for students to confront the complexities of our interconnected world, opportunities to learn the art of negotiation and develop the skills that will empower students to become the leaders of tomorrow.
At MUN Conferences, students represent not only countries but diverse perspectives, cultures, and values, all coming together to find solutions to the world’s most pressing issues. This process is never easy, but it is always rewarding.
To get to know the members of the event’s organizing committee better, we invite you to visit the Instagram account seb.mun.
We would like to thank Arianna Nardone, who, as Chief of Press, provided us with the summary of each day as well as some concluding thoughts.
The ECOFIN Committee
The Economic and Financial Organization debated on the topic of Mitigating the Adverse Impacts of Trade Wars and Hyper-protectionist Commercial Policies. During the 3 days of debate, the delegates came up with pertinent arguments and worked together to write a resolution that would implement new rules and regulations as well as stating the need for a new independent court that would resolve any issues regarding trade wars and such.
The HSC Committee
The Historical Security Council debated on the topic of the independence of Indonesia, addressing the multifaceted implications of its War of Independence. All the delegates brought up valid points in favour and against the topic, with 3 days of fiery debate. Unexpectedly, the resolution did not pass in the General Assembly and Indonesia was not declared an independent country.
The SOCHUM Committee
The Social and Humanitarian Committee debated on the topic of Preventing Spatial Segregation in the Context of Migration. After the opening speeches, the delegates discussed the root causes of the problem, while simultaneously trying to come up with different solutions that would suit every country’s needs. Their resolution proposed cultural events as a way of allowing minorities to express their culture freely. While it faced some challenges in the General Assembly, the resolution ultimately passed with the majority of the votes in favour.
The PHC Committee
The Pretoria High Court Committee was represented for the first time in Romania at SEBMUN, making all of us tremendously proud of everyone involved. The topic of this committee was the famous case of Nelson Mandela, a prominent leader of an organization that fought against racial segregation. Mandela faced multiple charges, such as conspiracy and sabotage. During the 3 days of debate, the Prosecution, Defense and Judges presented pertinent arguments and questions. In the end, Nelson Mandela was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison and a formal public apology.
The CRISIS Committee
The CRISIS Committee debated on the topic of the Civil War that shook all of England. The Houses found themselves in the middle of different critical situations and had the opportunity to develop their critical thinking and debate skills, while also making space for their creativity. In the end, after multiple deaths by execution, The Houses made a treaty that divided England in half.
Any respectable event also has its… gossip!
Whew! This edition of SEBMUN was really eventful. If you thought that the Gossip section of the SEBMUN NEWS was all we could come up with, you are entirely mistaken. So, I suggest every committee buckles up and enjoys the last ride on the Gossip Teapots.
The ECOFIN Committee: We saw a lot of first timers in your committee and let’s just say we were greatly impressed by their performance. You were a pretty calm committee regarding the gossip mill, but we get it, you like being mysterious, don’t you? But, nonetheless, at SEBMUN even the walls have eyes and ears, so we heard some interesting things. First of all, USA we get it, you loooove summer. Second of all, Australia, we get it, you loooove winter. Also, does no one in your committee have a favourite Kardashian sister? I guess we can’t really blame you for that… Ah! One more thing, really guys? GYATT and ILFOV? You sure have a vivid imagination when it comes to names, especially when they are supposed to be about serious economic stuff. Nonetheless, you came up with a great resolution and you should be proud of yourselves. Anyways, it was a pleasure having you here with us at SEBMUN and consider the prejudice that your committee is a frightening and boring one completely erased from everyone’s minds.
The HSC Committee: Your topic was a challenging one, so congratulations to the chairpersons for putting up with you. I guess after a long day of debate, a break was long overdue. I mean, Pamporea was long overdue. Everyone had amazing coordination skills, and for the girls that danced wearing high heels, you are stronger than you think you are. Also, a lot of football fans in this committee, by the way did someone find out who the RAPID fan was? If you did, I sincerely hope that they are ok. If you didn’t, well, I guess our investigation skills are better than yours. The important part is that everyone loves football, right? Speaking of love, apparently some delegates decided to seal the deal and get married at SEBMUN. Rumor has it that their union left behind some broken hearts, but, as the old saying goes, “All is fair in love and war.” Speaking of old sayings and traditions, our sources say that the “bride” was stolen during the ceremony. Don’t worry, they returned, but I think a change of heart occured that left the committee and the “groom” in shock. What’s your favourite break-up song? I think a country in particular really needs some recommandations. Also, we heard that some delegates wanted to play Cupid and suggested that two ex-lovers get back together. Oh well, there’s nothing more complicated than the matters of the heart. Anyways, it was a pleasure having you here with us at SEBMUN. If we need you, and we definitely will next year, we know where to find you: at the next FCSB match, right?
The SOCHUM Committee: You were an amazing committee but, if we have to be completely honest with you guys, we are a little bit salty after the speeches against the resolution, since, you know, we are a newspaper, but don’t worry, we still love you very much. You definitely took your daily “chill pill” and were focused on peaceful collaboration and getting work done efficiently. Do you think PHC could borrow some? Also, don’t be shy, tell us your favourite “rock de tați” song. Anyways, it was a pleasure having you here with us at SEBMUN. You were so nice with each other in your gossips and for that we send you lots of love and appreciation.
The PHC Committee: As the chairpersons of this committee have stated in their closing speeches, this committee was represented for the first time in Romania here at SEBMUN so we think that everyone should feel rightfully proud of themselves. We must admit that this committee carried the SEBMUN gossip on their backs. We heard a lot of laughter coming from your room and, honestly, all the gossip was really funny and quite frankly shocking. Unfortunately, you forgot to take your morning “chill pill” so the majority of it couldn’t be put into our newspaper. Nonetheless, it will forever remain in our hearts as fond memories to look back upon. Also, a little heads-up for chair Tudor, I think you had a lot of fans in this committee, I would feel really loved if I were you. Anyways, it was a pleasure having you here with us at SEBMUN. You handled Nelson Mandela’s case with professionalism and dedication.
The CRISIS Committee: You guys really found yourselves in the middle of a crisis. We were impressed by your ability to work under pressure and debate with each other but also to come to an agreement when needed. In your case, the tears started before the closing speeches, seeing as more than one delegate was sentenced to death. I’m sure they were greatly missed. Similar to the ECOFIN Committee, you have an affinity towards the invention of names, you know what we’re talking about. Also, we get it, George is the “border hopper” and the Tudors need to borrow a “chill pill” from the SOCHUM Committee. Anyways, it was a pleasure having you here with us at SEBMUN. If you need calming tea recommendations, you know where to find us.
Closing Remarks
Now it’s time to find our handkerchiefs and get ready to catch any stray tears because we’re going to talk about the closing ceremony speeches. The chairpersons moved us with their words, showing just how much care and attention they paid to every delegate in their committee. As the awards were given, the tension and anticipation in the air were tangible. The Board’s speeches were full of gratitude towards all the people involved, from delegates, members of the Staff and Press to sound technicians and the SNSPA faculty. Everyone had a great experience at SEBMUN 2024 and addressed their thanks to the European School of Bucharest for making this experience possible. As our Secretary General eloquently said, we have to work hard for our dreams, never lose hope and always trust ourselves and our abilities to reach our goals. To conclude, the third edition of SEBMUN has been an opportunity to learn new things about ourselves and the world around us, challenging us to become better and better with every day that passes.
The Final Remarks of the Press Team:
As for us, dear readers, it was a pleasure to write about you and your committees and we hope that you enjoyed our work. Until next time, stay curious, stay motivated, stay chatty.
This year’s edition of SEB Model United Nations has successfully concluded! Over the course of three days, the delegates engaged in heated debates, addressing issues, negotiating, and representing their assigned nations in order to reach a consensus.
Congratulations to all participants!
